Weinreich, Uriel

   American scholar of linguistics, editor and educator, son of Max Weinreich. He was born in Vilna, and emigrated to the US in 1940. He became professor of Yiddish language, liter-ature and culture at Columbia University in 1959. His writings include College Yiddish: An Introduction to the Yiddish Language and to Jewish Life and Culture, Language and Culture Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry and Modern English-Yiddish, Yiddish-English Dictionary.
